Chisholm Nails Down Doug Murphrey Memorial Prelim Night

Opening night of the 19th Annual Doug Murphrey Memorial on Friday at Boothill Speedway, was co-sanctioned with the USRA American Racer Modified Series presented by Day Motor Sports and the Summit United States Modified Touring Series Presented by RacinDirt.

Sponsored by Joel's Auto Sales, Murphrey Oil Company, Neises Motorsports, RaceOn and RacinDirt, the event showcased a 40-car field battling on the 3/8-mile high-banked dirt oval, with defending series champion Jim Chisholm of Osage, Iowa, emerging victorious.

Polesitter Chris Henigan of Marshall, Texas, set a torrid pace, leading the first 28 laps of the 40-lap Summit Racing Equipment “A” Main while fending off relentless pressure from four-time USMTS national champion Jason Hughes of Salina, Okla.

A caution on lap 28 changed the race's complexion, and on the restart, Chisholm seized the opportunity, passing Henigan to lead the final 12 laps and secure his 16th career USMTS win.

“Everyone here at Boothill, they gave us a phenomenal racing surface.," Chisholm said as he gleamed in Victory Lane. "The shape of the track is just so much fun. They work their butts off to give us a racetrack we could run about anywhere. I like these southern racetracks. I know it's really hot down here, but they're a lot of fun.”

He detailed his winning move, noting, “I saw him [lapped car] kind of losing it going into [turn] 1, and we backed up and went to the top there to stay out of harm's way. Todd [promoter Staley] calls it right away. He does a good job so us racers can miss the incidents.”

Henigan held on for second, and then reflected on his runner-up finish: “The guys are good. I spun the tires on the restart, and I was wore out. I ain't like these young guys.”

Heigan was followed to the finish line by five-time USMTS champion Rodney Sanders of Happy, Texas, who charged from 14th to third, earning the FK Rod Ends Hard Charger Award. Tanner Mullens of Wichita, Kan., finished fourth, and Kyle Strickler of Mooresville, N.C., got around Hughes late in the contest to round out the top five.

The 40-lap feature, completed in just over 15 minutes, saw just one caution, while Sanders bolstered his lead in the Summit USMTS National Championship points as Chisholm's win tightened the race for the title.

Boothill Speedway hosts the thrilling conclusion Saturday for the second night of the 19th Annual Doug Murphrey Memorial, where the main event winner will claim $10,000, and every main event starter will earn at least $1,000.

If you can't be there in person, every lap in every class will be streamed live at RacinDirt or RaceOn.
