Sanders Claims Doug Murphrey Memorial Finale

Rodney Sanders had unfinished business to tend to after coming up short in his run to the front on night number one of the Doug Murphrey Memorial. On night number two… he left no doubt in anyone’s mind who the fastest car was this weekend at the Boothill Speedway in Greenwood, LA.
Again, co-sanctioned with the Summit USMTS National Championship, 38 cars signed in for a chance at the $10,000 winners share. It looked to be a strong start for the USRA American Racer Modified Series presented by Day Motor Sports contingent after heat race inverts put them in position to sweep the four qualifying heat races. Heat race winners Sean Gaddis, Manuel Williams II, Kale Westover and Broc Bown looked to make a statement before the night was through.
After the top eight re-draw, it was father and son duo Jason and Trevor Hughes who led the field to the green from the front row. Jason Hughes quickly established himself at the front of the field leading lap one, before the race’s lone caution fell on lap two. When the green flag flew once again, the show had just begun.
Kyle Strickler made quick work of the younger Hughes duo, then went to work trying to track down the elder statesman at the front of the field. While that proved a tough chore, the action behind the lead duo was furious, with none working harder than Rodney Sanders.
After a 14th to third charge using the top side of the racetrack on night one, Sanders felt like he got trapped on the bottom of the racetrack trying to fight with Chris Henigan in the late stages of Friday’s 40 lapper. Saturday he was determined not to let that happen again.
Once again working around the top of the speedway, while most of the field ran the tires, Sanders charged to the front. Once to fourth, he quickly split and dispatched both Henigan and Stickler off turn two down the back stretch to grab second. A few laps later, on lap 35, he used a similar move on Hughes to snag the lead and never looked back.
When the checkers flew Sanders had run out to nearly a four and a half second lead. Strickler and Jason Hughes held a furious battle for second over the final 15 laps finishing in that order, while Henigan and Gary Christian completed the top 5.
When asked about if he wanted a caution in the latter stages of tonight’s event, like last night’s 40 lapper, Sanders responded, “I mean yes and no, I felt like I could carry good speed around the top when I could really charge the corner with nobody in front of me. You know, sometimes when we’re searching, some of them guys up front don’t really know where to go. I just didn’t know if they would see that screen in turn one and move around there. I felt like if he moved up, I could work the bottom. The car was really good, almost too tight, but it all worked out in the end.”
Indeed it did, as Sanders collected the Hard Charger award for the second night in a row, this one coming with a $10,000 winner’s payday attached.
The USRA American Racer Modified Series Presented by Day Motor Sports is back in action alongside the USRA Heartland Modified Tour presented by Real Wheels for the rescheduled “Joe Duvall’s Funkadelic Dirt Track and Honky-Tonk Extravaganza,” Friday July 18th at Arrowhead Speedway and Saturday July 19th at the Salina Highbanks.
