Mullens Outruns the Storm at Route 66

AMARILLO, Texas (October 10, 2025) — The opening night of the “Texas Two-Step” at Route 66 Motor Speedway delivered a hard-edged Lone Star showdown as the USRA American Racer Modified Series presented by Day Motorsports rolled into Amarillo with 49 hungry entries and no shortage of aggression on the racetrack.

Deatherage Opticians Quick Time went to Brayden Kongdara, setting the pace early before six stacked heat races saw Reece Solander, Billy Wilker, Tyler Davis, Joe Duvall, Hunter Sandy, and Philip Houston score preliminary victories. With the stage set, the 30-lap Wehrs Machine A Feature erupted into a caution-heavy sprint that played perfectly into the hands of a driver who knew how to make it work in his favor.

Starting deep in 13th, Tanner Mullens wasted no time blasting through traffic, using every early restart like a launching pad. New Mexico’s Hunter Sandy and veteran Philip Houston brought the field to the green, but as the yellows stacked up before halfway, Mullens carved his way forward. Once the race finally strung together a long green-flag run, Mullens powered around Sandy to take the lead and begin stretching command.

But the race wasn’t sealed yet. Stormy Scott came alive in the closing laps, closing rapidly as the leaders sliced through dense lapped traffic. With two to go, Mullens split a pair of slower cars with a decisive move that forced Scott to hesitate for just a heartbeat — and that was all it took. At the checkers, Mullens secured his second ARMS victory of the year and ninth Heartland Promotions win of the 2025 season, earning hard charger honors at +12 positions gained.

“I think we threw about every adjustment we could at it after qualifying,” Mullens said in victory lane. “We finally just went back to standard stuff. I figured someone was there.  It was tricky getting by the lap cars, I really had to check up for them.  But it was good and I hope tomorrow is good too.”

TOMORROW — TEXAS TWO-STEP FINALE

Tonight was just the warm-up. Saturday pays $6,000 to win, and one thing’s for certain — nobody will give an inch when Route 66 fires back to life under the lights.
